Updates from the coach
- Where do I go to do my Health Check?

- What does my child need BEFORE they get on the lift?
- Pack backpack to bring on the hill: snack, water, hand warmers, extra layer of clothing
- Check TeamSnap to be sure you have the right skis and equipment for training
- Dress for the weather and MASK UP
- Take your TeamSnap Health Check over to the check-in station at the deck of the Ski Simulator (located just above the pig) and pick up your colored bracelet to put on your coat zipper

- Who do I contact if my athlete is late to program?
- Ian Miller or Sinead Lavery - both of whom work in the Comp Center
- How will I know if the daily schedule has changed or if a program day has been delayed/cancelled due to weather?
- All scheduling updates and changes for U12s specifically will come from Caroline Mutter using TeamSnap.
- Your TeamSnap App will also list schedule start times on the schedule tab
- Program wide announcements will come from Sean Warman and be available on our WEBSITE
- What is the protocol for athletes getting together outside of the program?
- We encourage all of our families to follow state recommendations and to support our safety guidelines on and off the hill.
- Working together we can all do our part to ensure we get to do what we love = skiing
- Where do I meet my child at the end of the program day?
- U12s will be self dismissed. We recommend that you discuss as a family ahead of time where to meet.
- How do I know which skis my child will need for any given training session?
- This information is likely to change weekly and will be included in Caroline Mutter’s weekly TeamSnap email and when possible also be updated in the Schedule notes on TeamSnap
- What should my child have in her/his backpack?
- Snack - fruit, granola bar, thermos of soup
- Water bottle
- Possibly an extra layer of clothing, hand warmers, back up neck warmer
- Where am I able to meet my child inside? Will we have access to the lodge?
- For any resort specific changes please always check the Windham Resort Website
- The main lodge and Wheelhouse will allow for 50% occupancy
- The 3500 Club will only allow for moving traffic, no lingering
- There are heated benches and a fire pit at the base

How do I register?
- You can register for all of your races at the same time (note that currently we are waiting for West Mtn to add the entry form for Kandahar Festival)
- www.adminskiracing.com is the entry portal for ALL race registration - including MWC.
- Race registration for all mountains closes at 12pm the Thursday before the race
What memberships do I need?
- All Kandahar U10 and U12s need both a United States Ski and Snowboard Membership (www.usskiandsnowboard.org) and a NY State Ski Racing Association Membership (www.nyssra.org)
For The Kandahar Festival: Can I drive from Windham or should I book a hotel?
- The drive from Windham to West Mountain is ~ 2 hours.
- There will be a training day on Friday 3/8th followed by 2 days of racing.
- We recommend that coaches and athletes book The Queensbury Hotel in Glens Fall, NY www.thequeensburyhotel.com
- Reservations may be made by calling as part of the Windham Race Factory to receive our group rate (BIG thank you to Nancy Bodnar for helping to organize) and identifying yourself
- Please have your athletes eat healthy and get plenty of sleep this week.
- Please help your athletes tune and wax their equipment if possible. If you are using the ski shop ask for a "race tune" (3-degree side and 0.7 degree base).
- GS suits are welcomed but not required. If you do not have one, do not buy one and if you have extras share them.
- All racers need to wear hear ear helmets (they do not need to be FIS approved until you are a U14)
- What is a Kombi race? A kombi is a mix of GS and SL in one race. Typically we will set the SL section using stubbies and the GS with standard Panel Gates. The distance between the gates ranges from 12-20 meters between each gate.
Tips for Race Day:
- Arrive early
- Select an area in the base lodge for all WRF athletes to congregate together - focus on sportsmanship and representing our mountain
- Encourage athletes to bring water and healthy snack
- Remember that times posted to the scoreboard are provisional. This means that the results are not official until you see the printed or online version.
- Athletes should meet their coaches at the designated area to inspect together. Note that only coaches with official USSA coaching memberships are allowed to inspect and be on the hill with athletes.
- The start order of 1st run is random - usually a race is run by all U10 girls, followed by all U10 boys, then U12 girls, U12 boys, and so forth. However, the host can choose to run all girls and then all boys. 2nd run will run in reverse order of top 15 or 30 (depending on what the jury choses). A ruling of the jury at the Captains Meeting will determine how DSQs will work. Most U14 and younger races will allow all athletes to take a 2nd run with DSQs running in bid order after all other racers have go through. However, sometimes the jury will choose to eliminate this 2nd run for DSQs should the day be running out of sun light.
- The course will be open for inspection after the Chief of Race, TD and Ref have signed off on the course set and officially opened the course for inspection.
- All racers should inspect with their coaches. Typically inspection can be done by side skipping through the course. However, if the jury has any concerns
about the durability of the snow they may request at the Captains Meeting that all athletes slip outside of the course.
- After inspection coaches will instruct athletes to be at the start with plenty of time to be relaxed and get ready for their start.
- After the first run, a coach from a visiting mountain selected during the Captains Meeting will reset the course on the same hill as first run.
- Typically the reset will take about 15-30 minutes and inspection will open after the Chief of Race, Ref and TD have signed off.
- Again, the top 30 will run in reverse order for second run and then in time order from there after with all DSQs following at the end in bib order.
- *** It is the coaches obligation to check the DSQ list when it is posted on the scoreboard after 1st run. There is a 15 minute protest period after the list has been posted in which a cash amount (typically $50) needs to be posted to the jury and the athlete is afforded due process to protest their DSQ. After the protest period has passed there is no recourse. *** Note that the TD, COR and Ref will do their best to get this posted about 10 minutes after 1st run is completed.
- All athletes will inspect second run with their coaches and head to the start for the 2nd run.
- The awards ceremony takes places as soon as possible after the completion of the race. Irrespective of whether your racer has achieved a place on the podium, it shows good sportsmanship and team support for all athletes to stay for the ceremony to recognize and show respect for the successful athletes and the race organizers.
- All coaches who are assigned to inspecting with athletes and taking part in the race are required to be USSA registered coaches and must already have completed the 'Fast Start' online course.
- If you feel that your run has been interfered with - STOP. Do not continue down the course. Do not go through the finish. Report to the nearest gate judge and explain what happened. They will then send you back to the stop to take your re-run.
- If you come to a complete stop while making your run (ie. after a fall), your run is over. Go to the side of the course and ski down slowing.There is no more hiking allowed.
- If you knowingly miss a gate, you can no longer continue through further gates.
Who makes up the Race Committee:
- Chief of Race: responsible for making sure everyone on the hill is communicating, keeping the race safe
- Chief of Course: responsible for keeping the race course safe and fair - typically thinking about snow conditions, b-netting and so forth
- Ref: Selected at the Captains Meeting as the person to represent the athletes in the race. This person must be from a visiting mountain and is expected to review the course set to ensure it is safe and fair for the level of athletes in the competition.

History of Kandahar:
Kandahar began in 1974. It is estimated there were about 80 racers the first year. Now we have over 600 racers and families each year who participate state-wide. It was created as an opportunity for kids who did not make state teams to continue racing throughout the season. The Kandahar name comes from the original sponsor of the race, Chip Armstrong. The name of the shop was Chip’s Kandahar in Cortland, NY.
Since the first year of this Jr III, IV, V race NYSSRA has sent a state team to Gunstock, NH for the Buddy Werner Championships – now called the Piche Invitational.
Development level ski racers gather from all over the east to clinic together on Friday
and race on Saturday in March. Fun is abundant at both our Kandahar Series and in
For years Kandahar was run at Greek Peak. These wonderful events were prior to sophisticated snow making equipment. No matter what, the Greek Peak Ski Club got this event off. The race has always been a two day event. Families from around the state became acquainted and all present pulled together to make it happen. This event has always embodied some of the best aspects of ski racing, including friendly, healthy competition in a fun, family atmosphere. The foundation of the original event was based on the idea of athlete development and outdoor fun. Kandahar continues to this day to promote the same purpose.
Kandahar was held at Greek Peak until about 1991 and then began to move around the state. It has been held at Brantling, Holimon, West Mtn, and Gore Mtn. Due to the huge success and participation of this event, the Kandahar became a regional festival event in 2002, with Kandahar Festivals being held in the eastern, central, and western regions of the state. The top finishers from each of the festival event then compete at a
state-wide Kandahar Championship held at a different location each year.
Note: The history of the Kandahar dates back to the early 1900’s. Sir Henry Lunn organized what can be called the first formal Alpine Downhill in Switzerland in 1911. At stake was the Kandahar Trophy (donated by Lord Roberts of Kandahar, India). Sir Henry’s son, Arnold is credited with inventing the modern slalom in 1922 in a competition at Murren, Switzerland as well as with championing the push to include alpine skiing in the Winter Olympics. After a combined event at the 1936 Winter Olympics, Alpine Skiing emerged in its own right in the next Winter Games in 1948 with downhill and slalom events.
